This is a very important innovation, which will certainly have a huge impact on "mapping". A function is a text file with the extension .mcfunction, which contains the usual minecraft teams(The "#" symbol is used for commenting.)
The function can be executed by a direct call (by command), from a command block, or by getting an achievement.
Since many commands can be written into one function, the use of functions in conjunction with command blocks, can greatly simplify long sequences of command blocks.
Of course, "features" in Minecraft are not full-fledged features in terms of programming. It's more like bat files - just a sequence of commands. But who knows what plans the developers have for them? Perhaps, with the expansion of the list of commands, the functions will become a means of full-fledged programming?

As a result, players will not need to scour different sites in search of all possible recipes - they can be studied right during the game.
At the same time, regardless of whether the player has studied the recipes or not, he can use them. Although, in Minecraft 1.13 it will be possible for map creators to add their own recipes, as well as customize the conditions for accessing them.
New achievement system
Will replace the old one. Its main feature is that the developers have implemented a mechanism by which achievements are not "hardwired in the code", but are formed on the basis of json files built into the game. This allows developers to easily and easily add new achievements to the game, and in the future (presumably in minecraft versions 1.13) map builders will have this opportunity.
