Tons of genres and stories. We cut ourselves into many!

Game developers have been exploiting augmented reality for quite a long time. However, until recently, there were no games as popular as you know what, so there was no loud talk about augmented reality as a new industry trend.

We have collected augmented reality games that do not require Google Glass and Microsoft HoloLens. For a pleasant pastime, the smartphone already has everything you need: camera, speakers / headphones, GPS, accelerometer and gyroscope. Enjoy.

The goal of the game is to throw the ball into a basketball basket, which in reality is represented by a paper marker with a QR code. Yes, in order for the basketball hoop to appear, you need to print a QR code. But you work in the office, and this is not a problem for you, right?

So, over this printed marker, the smartphone builds a basketball backboard with a hoop. The ball is thrown with a swipe. Good practice before catching Pokemon, by the way.

We look at our feet through the smartphone camera and catch up with the virtual ball displayed on the screen. Not childishly addictive.

Tower defense game in which the player needs to defend his tower from incoming enemies. The battles take place in the area selected by the player: in the apartment, on the street, in the subway - and anywhere.

To place the turret, you need to place a printed marker on the playing surface (again, let's put the printer into action). Futuristic vehicles take part in the battles: robotic tanks, self-propelled guns, etc. 4 users can play at the same time, for this, a wi-fi connection is provided between the devices.

Simple racing with augmented reality. To start the game, you need to point the smartphone camera at a specially prepared marker that displays the starting point. You can (virtually) place cones as obstacles on the track.

This game is a good motivating mechanism for running, as the player needs to run away from the zombies. In addition to the camera, this AR app uses speakers/headphones and determines the position using GPS. When running away, you need to collect first-aid kits and other bonuses. The game starts when the player leaves the house, puts on the headphones and launches the app.

First, you are instructed in English - the application does not have Russian localization. After that, the zombies begin to breathe loudly into the back of the head and demand brains. It's time to run! The game records time, speed and distance traveled along with calories lost. The application is recommended to anyone who is bored of running alone.

This game is a real first person shooter in the real world. There are 25 weapons, static and dynamic targets, and multiple firefight modes. True sounds of shots and realistic physics of the trajectory of bullets - what else is needed to destroy a couple of mutants in your yard?

In this game, you need to heroically repel the attacks of alien invaders, as if the developers moved the classic arcade game Invaders into augmented reality. The game has two modes: 180-degree defense and 360-degree all-round defense. In addition, you can play with friends in multiplayer mode.

Another zombie game. A ruthless first-person shooter where the ghouls are already among us and can jump out from behind every corner.

In addition to zombies, the player is attacked by resurrected dogs and mummies ( who?!). There are 6 types of weapons and 2 modes: a survival game where zombies attack the player, and a safe mode where you can just watch the unlife of the dead among the living (for notorious pacifists).

In this game, you need to guide a red ball through a 3D maze. During the game, you need to touch the light bulbs with a ball to turn them on. Goal: turn on the maximum number of light bulbs on the way. Augmented reality is tied to the fact that the labyrinth is built on the basis of printed markers.

Markers for printing must be taken on this site. The game allows you to build a large-scale and intricate maze, for real hardcore gamers.

The action in the game revolves around the confrontation of monsters. Augmented reality plays the role of the background and environment of the fight. Monsters can use different magic. The player is required to strategically plan the battle: make an attack or use magic. Actually, from right choice actions and the outcome of the fight depends.

The meaning of this puzzle is to help the virtual character get out of the real world. As the environment, background and obstacles, a section of the real world, captured on a smartphone camera, is used. To help the character, you need to pave the way for him in augmented reality, raising and lowering certain areas of the map.

Space shooter in augmented reality. A specially prepared box is installed, a smartphone camera is directed at it. As conceived by the developers, the box turns into a hangar, in which a user-controlled unit appears, taking the form of a humanoid robot or a space fighter, which will have to protect the planet from an alien attack. He can knock out small asteroids or dodge large ones.

Afterword

With this compilation, we want to say that before Pokemon Go there was a whole bunch of games using augmented reality. Gamemakers sprinkle ashes on their heads: “I came up with a similar game a few years ago ...”, but this is a mistake.

Augmented reality games for android are the technology of the future, the distinguishing feature of which is to blur the clear line between the worlds (real and virtual). Such applications allow you to discover new possibilities of smartphones. Thanks to this, you can create a unique futuristic world.

These games are for everyone large quantity of people. However, they are on this moment not very popular among the population. This is due to the fact that in them you need not just to sit and press the keys, but to run, jump, experiment, rotate the screen, etc. Often, the game requires not only a smartphone, but also additional materials. For example, you may need to print out a map of a football field, or your own photos, or something else. The scope of the imagination of the developers is downright surprising.

The number of such applications is constantly growing. Each of them surprises more and more with its originality, huge imagination of developers, blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction. This can be seen while browsing our catalog.

According to the plot, during the study of the Higgs boson, a mysterious energy was accidentally discovered. The opening promises simply incredible opportunities. And of course, everyone was divided into two camps - ardent opponents of the use of the substance and those who want to bring humanity to a new stage of development, regardless of any sacrifices. Ingress is a cross-media project reminiscent of its other peers in the same genre, but with a few differences. The game uses the geo-data of the players (adherents of conspiracy theorists suffering from paranoia and just very impressionable - please refrain) turns the surrounding landscape into scenery in the spirit of a Hollywood science fiction film. The application on the phone will prompt and indicate the path to certain points, the so-called portals. Arriving at which with the help of a mini-game you get bonuses in the form of artifacts. Already, Ingress looks like a very promising project, with proper development, it can turn into a truly cult product.

Modern board games are a wonderful way to spend time with loved ones. They are very different: in some you need to manage finances well ("Monopoly"), in others - to cause chaos, raising everyone's mood ("Munchkin"), the third will submit to strong strategists ("Magic The Gathering"), and the fourth - to people with developed logical thinking("Cluedo"). But almost all board games have in common that they can be made more interesting with the help of augmented reality. Or even completely transfer to it.

How will desktop games change in the next ten years? Some don't. It is not always necessary to add something to a good game, because it is so easy to spoil the balance and atmosphere. But many will become something new due to the evolution of interfaces. Augmented reality will affect all aspects of human activity, and board games, being clearly a field for experimentation, will be one of the first updated things in the world of c, and.

Today we have selected three modern projects for you board games augmented reality, which show the current state of such developments. They are not perfect, but five years ago, after watching such videos, I urgently wanted to turn on the normal computer game in order to quickly forget what he saw, and now you really want to try everything.

HoloGrid: Monster Battle

HoloGrid is the creation of game creators HappyGiant and production specialists Tippett Studio. Together they set out to make a tactical strategy with elements of chess, board and card games, that is, to combine all the best of offline under the flag of augmented reality. The game is available on HoloLens and published in the Microsoft Store. You can buy it for only $5 (about ₽300), which seems like a ridiculous price for the owner of a gadget priced at $3,000 (about ₽180,000).

HoloGrid: Monster Battle lets you experience board games in a whole new way by blending digital holograms of a chess battle with the real world, says Brandon Bray, head of the Windows Mixed Reality developer ecosystem at Microsoft. - Marvelous! I'm happy to see Happy Giant as a pioneer in bringing gaming to life in our own homes.

The product weighs just over 155 megabytes and only supports English language. There are versions for iOS, Android, and Samsung Gear VR, with cross-platform multiplayer working between them.

Echelon

The second heroine of our selection also works on HoloLens. Echelon is a fantasy game from Helios Interactive that features classic turn-based map combat reminiscent of Heroes of Might & Magic. The project is not ready; in fact, it's just a proof of concept so far. But such a proof can already be built up with graphics and scenarios.

Producer Helios Interactive Ltdby Fuller Knight (Devin Fuller Knight) emphasizes the peculiarity of the gameplay in glasses:

The fact that you can actually interact with another player on HoloLens while you're on HoloLens is really fun, it's such a solo experience. The idea of being able to interact with another player and being able to see the same world in the same [space] is really fun.

There are both pluses and minuses in the similarity of augmented reality board games with classic computer and board games. On the one hand, developers become dependent on settings that have long been invented and bored with some gamers. It is difficult to break out of this corridor of the same type of solutions. On the other hand, the base is already there - just come up with chips, ways to make your project unique, using the features of the environment used.

The Machines

But the world is not limited to fantasy and HoloLens. iOS will become a much more mainstream augmented reality platform in the near future. In fact, in recent years, it has already become a development standard: due to the prevalence of Apple smartphones and tablets of the same type, many studios developed for Android on a leftover basis - if there were resources left. And the owners of the iPhone and iPad were the first to receive the new software. You may not like it, but a fact is a fact.

ARKit has significantly strengthened Apple's already enviable position in the augmented reality market. Therefore, the Shanghai studio Directive Games Limited chose this engine to create the PVP strategy "The Machines", in which users can fight each other at the same table or online. Main characters here - robots, whose armies meet on a tactically interesting - hilly and filled with objects - battlefield.

"The Machines" is an officially announced game, although there is no detailed information about it yet and no timeline has been announced. Let's hope that its developers (as well as the developers of other games) will soon please us with fresh news.

AR Dragon

Tamagotchi with a flying dragon as a pet. Potentially, such projects will appear in the largest possible number, and they will differ only in animal species, therefore they will quickly tire. But for now, the novelty effect works, because the dragon in the living room is funny.

IKEA Place

The app, which gives access to the IKEA furniture catalog, stands out for its incredibly precise space training. You can choose furniture and arrange it in the apartment to understand whether the sofa will fit and whether the orange armchair will fit into the existing interior.

The only disadvantage of the program is that it is not available in the Ukrainian App Store, so you will have to use an American account. However, the tracking accuracy and implementation as a whole is worth such torment.

Thomas and Friends: Minis

A children's game in which you have to build a railway pleases with pleasant animation. The real strength of the game is that once a railroad is created, it can be placed in the real world.

Orb

A sandbox in which the user creates complex three-dimensional objects in space from simple shapes. The description seems boring, but it was this project that, after trying all the available products, dragged on the most.

World Brush

The application allows you to paint the real world on the screen of your smartphone or tablet. All drawings are linked to geolocation, so that other users of the application will be able to see the works of artists when they get to the designated point. InkHunter

The application allows you to try on tattoos, a collection of pictures from different authors is available. Minus - the program asks to draw three stripes on the arm in order to more accurately track the location of the tattoo.

Ingress

Long before Niantic became known for the Pokémon that settled around us, they developed a sci-fi game based on this technology. This multiplayer team competition was the first a prime example penetration of augmented reality into our lives.

Zombies Everywhere!

Augmented reality has also penetrated into the world inhabited by zombies, thereby settling them among us. This first-person shooter offers players to shoot the living dead in real locations, where they lie in wait on almost every corner. Be attentive and careful, and then victory will be yours.

Jurassic World Alive

The craze for dinosaurs has been going strong ever since the first Jurassic Park movie, and it's no surprise that dinosaur games, sooner or later, had to appear in augmented reality as well. This project is very similar to Pokemon GO, but there are some differences here - in addition to collecting and training dinosaurs for battle, you will also play mini-games and create various hybrids. The AR component itself plays a slightly smaller role here, Pokemon GO, but nevertheless important enough to replenish its collection of prehistoric monsters.

AR Sports Basketball

Turning the world around you into a giant basketball court is not so difficult if you have AR Sports Basketball installed on your smartphone. Your phone's camera will display a real picture on the screen, on which the basket will appear - all that remains is to throw the ball into it with the help of swipes. This game will be great entertainment at lunchtime or brighten up your walk home - simple, fun and interesting.

The Machines

Augmented reality turned out to be extremely convenient for the implementation of digital board games with its help. CSR Racing 2

CSR Racing 2 is a Need-style racer for Speed, in which the developers decided to use AR elements to depict cars in real size, with the ability to view them in a circular view and even look inside to appreciate the interior. This feature does not affect the actual racing process, and, in fact, is useless, but your car looks so beautiful and real, which means AR is worth it.

Silent Streets

This project is something new in the field of AR games. It invites gamers to plunge into adventures reminiscent of the investigations of Sherlock Holmes, where virtual reality combined with the depth of the story and the locations of the real world. The famous hat and pipe are waiting for you, as well as mysterious murders that urgently need to be investigated.

Pokémon Go

It's easy to explain why Pokemon GO became a global phenomenon in the summer of 2016 - everyone's favorite cute monsters took up residence around us and made gamers get up from their sofas, moving to the streets in pursuit of them. The popularity of the brand combined with Niantic's geolocation technology has led to a resounding success for the project, and the number of downloads of this game speaks for itself - it definitely deserves attention.
