Feelings of loneliness, confusion, and other psychophysical conditions take a toll on our productivity, motivation, social connections, and well-being. Where did they come from? Perhaps you have health problems, or perhaps you just need to push your body a little with simple actions and a balanced diet. We will tell you about them.

Endorphins

Endorphins are naturally produced in the neurons of the brain in response to pain and stress and help relieve anxiety and depression. Like morphine, they act as a pain reliever and sedative, reducing our perception of pain.

The events that contribute to the production of the body's natural opiates are well understood and fall into three main groups: diet, habits, and exercise.

Food

So what should we eat to get rid of the emotional burden that has piled on? We answer:

  • Right dark chocolate thanks to its high content of antioxidants, it protects against heart attacks, lowers blood pressure, lowers the level of "bad" cholesterol, increases the content of "good" and, interestingly for us, stimulates the production of endorphins. But it’s too early for chocolate lovers to rejoice, because the recommended norm is only a couple of slices a day.
  • Cayenne pepper, jalapeno pepper, and others hot peppers contain capsaicin - a substance with a strong burning taste that affects the nerve cells of the mucous membranes of the nose and mouth. The brain, receiving a signal about a strong stimulus, reacts to a burning sensation by producing endorphins. Therefore, to cheer up you need to add spiciness to your dishes. "Burning" food also kills pathogens and promotes sweating, which is especially helpful for cooling the body in hot weather.
  • Some aromas directly affect the production of endorphins. For example, according to the New York Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, patients who inhaled the aroma before undergoing an MRI vanilla, in 63% of cases less likely to experience a feeling of anxiety. Another study found that odor lavender Helps fight depression and insomnia. Use vanilla and lavender as spices, add essential oils to your bath, use scented candles based on them, and also brew healing tinctures of these plants.
  • In addition to improving mental performance, including memory and concentration, lowering blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, treating certain cardiovascular and lung diseases, ginseng relieves physical fatigue and moral stress. No wonder the traditional Chinese medicine claims that ginseng prolongs life and youth, and many runners and bodybuilders take it to increase physical endurance. The reason is the same stimulation of the production of endorphins.

habits

Every child knows that laugh prolongs life. But adults often forget about this. That is why kids laugh hundreds of times a day, and their parents - well, if a dozen.

But in vain, because the famous biblical instruction says:

A merry heart is good as medicine, but a despondent spirit dries up the bones.

If you are far from religion, I will mention one interesting history associated with the healing properties of laughter for the soul and body. And it happened to Norman Cousins - an American scientist, teacher and journalist. One day, Norman began to feel severe pain in his joints, and a little later, doctors diagnosed him with a degenerative disease incompatible with life. After these disappointing words, the patient decided that recovery depended only on himself, and was discharged from the hospital, refusing medication. The treatment was reduced to taking vitamins and incessant sessions of laughter therapy. Norman constantly watched entertainment TV, humorous stories were read to him, and he did not get tired of shedding tears of laughter. A month later, the disease receded, and subsequently completely disappeared. Cousins's own experience formed the basis of popular books, and his example inspired many other "hopelessly" patients.

Find a reason to laugh. Develop the habit of finding something funny around you. It's the easiest everyday way to kick-start your endorphins and help you feel good in the here and now.

What comes before? Of course, smile! But not the unnatural and strained one that is found on the faces of employees early in the morning. And that sincere and involuntary smile that is born, for example, on the faces of people in love. In science, it is called the Duchenne smile and occurs as a result of contraction of the zygomaticus major muscle and the lower part of the orbicular muscle of the eye. That is, it is a smile with “eyes and mouth”, and not just sparkling teeth.

Look at photos with a pleasant story, communicate with perky people and do not miss a reason to smile back.

As a rule, a "long" tongue is not good, but in some cases gossip can have a positive effect. No, you are not called to rattle your tongue left and right, but passing on secrets and piquancy by word of mouth can stimulate the production of endorphins. Scientists believe that gossip helps "social animals" stay connected and is rewarded by stimulating pleasure centers in the brain. However, it is important to understand that the information should be positive, because only in this case it will lead to a surge of endorphins.

Love and sex- the most frequent topics from the previous paragraph. Move from words to deeds! Touch, closeness and pleasant sensations calm the nerves, give a sense of security and confidence, and also uplift the mood. inspire you and strengthen your physical condition.

Orgasm like a quick shot of endorphin? Why not!

Physical exercises

Go in for sports. This is a fast and beneficial method of producing endorphins with a delayed effect. Any physical activity releases endorphins into the bloodstream, significantly improving mood. It is important to mention that group classes also have an advantage. For example, a 2009 study found that synchronized rowers received an increased rush of happy hormones compared to single rowers. Although independent walking, cycling, aerobics also give the desired result.

Ready to take a little risk? Take on skydiving, bungee jumping, skydiving, rollercoasters and anything else that seems a little reckless to you. Taking a step back from your calm zone will help release endorphins.

Dopamine

Dopamine (dopamine) is a neurotransmitter that motivates a person to achieve goals, satisfy desires and needs. It is produced in the human brain and causes a feeling of satisfaction (or pleasure) as a sign of encouragement for the result. It plays an important role in the system of motivation and training of people.

Dopamine forces us to make efforts towards our goals. Procrastination, lack of enthusiasm and self-doubt are always associated with a lack of dopamine. Studies in rats showed that rodents with low levels of the neurotransmitter chose a simple solution to a problem and were content with a small portion of food. And rats that were willing to work hard for more rewards had elevated levels of dopamine.

Food

The dopamine diet consists of:

  • Avocado, banana, almond, tofu ("bean curd"), fish, pumpkin seeds. All these products contain tyrosine, an amino acid synthesized into dihydroxyphenylalanine, and the latter is the precursor of dopamine. Tyrosine is also found in meat and oil products, but you need to be especially careful here due to the high calorie content.
  • Green and orange vegetables, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts, beets, asparagus, carrots, peppers, oranges, strawberries and other foods high in antioxidants and vitamins C and E. They will help protect the brain cells responsible for the production of dopamine.

habits

With the right mindset, dopamine doesn't care what you've achieved: you've climbed high mountain or pulled up one more time than yesterday. The neurotransmitter still activates the pleasure centers. Therefore, it is important to learn how to break global goals into small subtasks. For example, you are planning to write a thesis. Celebrate the writing of each chapter with a trip to the cafe for your favorite ice cream, and dopamine will inspire you for the rest of the way.

Note to managers: give their subordinates bonuses or praise for local successes so that dopamine increases their productivity and motivation.

Serotonin

Serotonin helps to feel your own importance and importance. Its deficiency leads to alcoholism, depression, aggressive and suicidal behavior. It is believed that the lack of a neurotransmitter is one of the reasons why people become criminals. Many antidepressants focus on the production of serotonin.

In one study, scientists have proven the role of serotonin in determining social status in monkeys. They found that the level of the neurotransmitter in the dominant individual was higher than in other monkeys. However, if the head lost contact with his subordinates (he was placed in a cage), then the level of serotonin in his blood gradually decreased.

Food

habits

A relationship has been traced between time spent in the sun and an increase in serotonin levels: it is higher in summer than in winter. The skin absorbs ultraviolet rays, which boosts the production of the neurotransmitter. Of course, in the pursuit of good health, you should not abuse your exposure to the sun and harm your health.

To lighten your mood, open the blinds to let in natural light.

Do you experience stress at work? Relax for a moment and remember something good. Happy memories will certainly contribute to the production of serotonin. Reflect on your previous accomplishments or re-live through a significant moment from the past. This practice reminds us that we are valued and that there are many things to appreciate in life.

Oxytocin

Oxytocin enhances the feeling of trust, reduces anxiety and fear, gives calmness and confidence. The hormone strengthens human relationships. For example, it is involved in the formation of a bond between mother and child immediately after childbirth, and is also produced during orgasm in men and women. Oxytocin is supposed to be involved in the development of feelings of love.

Scientists from the University of Bonn came to interesting conclusions: oxytocin strengthens the institution of marriage! The group of men was divided into two parts, one of which was injected with oxytocin, and the second - a placebo. The researchers speculated that the bonding power of the hormone would push men to bond with strangers and they would forget about their current commitments. However, when the subjects were asked to estimate the acceptable distance between them and the "alien" woman, the opposite was found. Men under the influence of oxytocin preferred to stay 10-15 centimeters further from the object of temptation.

Dear ladies, oxytocin is able to keep a man close! But what is needed for this?

habits

Hugs, hugs and more hugs! Oxytocin is sometimes referred to as the cuddling hormone. American oxytocin expert Dr. Paul Zak even recommends a minimum hugging rate of eight times a day.

Forgo handshakes in favor of hugs if you want to enhance interpersonal relationships.

Oxytocin enhances trust and... generosity! This can be used carefully. Although women know this at the level of instincts, casting a bait about their wildest desires immediately after sex. :) Yes, the peak of sexual relations leads to the release of oxytocin.

The reverse process also works. If you want to strengthen relationships, it is enough to do to a person - the hormone will do its job.

March, drops, first flowers, endorphins! It is these substances that appear in advertising publications with the first rays of the spring sun. A rare call to sign up for a yoga class, eat a healthy treat or drink an eco-friendly cocktail goes without the name of these popular “hormones of joy”. What do we know about endorphins to rely on them like that? In this article, we will analyze their effect on the female body and get acquainted with the less known, but no less important members of the “pleasure hormones” group.

1. Endocrine system

In general, what are hormones, and why are they needed? Hormones are signaling substances produced in the cells of the endocrine glands. After synthesis, hormones enter the bloodstream and are transferred to target organs, where certain biochemical and physiological functions are performed. regulatory functions. In other words, these are substances with the help of which the internal systems of the body “communicate”. A sort of system of internal communication, thanks to which homeostasis is maintained - a painless adaptation of the body to constantly changing conditions of external and internal environment. The main control organ is the hypothalamus - a part of the brain that "reads" the internal and external "environment" and, with the help of hormone-commands, gives the appropriate "orders", regulating the most important functions of the body (thermoregulation, hunger and thirst, reproductive function, sleep and wakefulness, etc.) The boundaries between hormones and other signaling substances, such as mediators, neurotransmitters and growth factors, are rather arbitrary. Often, these signaling substances have common patterns of biosynthesis, metabolism, and mechanism of action. Neurohormones and neurotransmitters called signaling substances that are produced and secreted by the cells of the central nervous system. They will be discussed.

2. The Fab Four

There are several types of substances that are conditionally called "hormones of pleasure." Without them, it would be impossible not only to enjoy life, but simply to survive. There are many more than four of them, they are not fully understood and continue to arouse the interest of neuroscientists. We will talk about the main, known today, "hormones of joy, happiness and pleasure."

So, endorphins. In the plural, because this is a whole family of substances. The most popular of these is beta-endorphin. It has analgesic, anti-shock and anti-stress effects, reduces appetite and reduces the sensitivity of certain parts of the central nervous system.

The release of endorphins is the body's response to stress and pain. It is thanks to these substances that a person is able to survive, having received serious injuries. Endorphins normalize blood pressure, respiratory rate, accelerate the healing of damaged tissues. In a sense, these are really “hormones of happiness” - happiness that has survived. In my own way chemical composition and the mode of action they are similar to opiates, for which they got their name, translated from Greek meaning "internal morphine". A high amount of endorphins in the blood creates an elevated mood, a state of "euphoria", for which they, in fact, received the erroneous name "hormones of joy." Modern research prove that this condition is caused by the interaction of several neurotransmitters.

Feelings of euphoria may occur after a debilitating sports training, associated with overcoming oneself and / or oxygen starvation of the muscles (an indicator of such a load is, for example, shaking under the knee when you are trying to straighten the leg, which is not yet ready to straighten). The release of endorphins occurs to adapt the body to stress when exercise stops.

In moderation, an endorphin load strengthens the immune system, as it mobilizes all body systems to fight stress.

A large amount of endorphins indicates that a woman is in danger. For the hypothalamus, this is a signal that the body is not ready for reproduction, and it blocks the production of luteinizing hormone, due to which ovulation occurs. Lack of ovulation is one of the many violations of the menstrual cycle, which has a number of unpleasant consequences, which we will write about separately.

In addition, an excess of endorphins leads to an increase in the level of cortisol, the stress hormone, as a result of which the immune system weakens and we become very vulnerable.

Like all opiates, endorphins are addictive and addictive. That is why people who "can't live" without sports should constantly increase their physical activity.

Consider the remaining three "joyful hormones."

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that also causes a feeling of uplifting mood. As a rule, it is associated with encouragement. Imagine that you were praised just like that, for nothing. The response of the body can be a whole range of emotions - from satisfaction to the same "euphoria". Lack of serotonin can lead to low mood and depression.

Dopamine- acts as a neurotransmitter and hormone at the same time. Dopamine levels peak during activities such as eating and sex. Even thinking about the upcoming pleasure is pleasant, because already in the process of waiting for it, the level of dopamine rises. Also, it is associated with the ability to make decisions and with a sense of satisfaction from the successful completion of a task.

Well, the cherry on the cake - oxytocin- neurotransmitter and hormone of tenderness, love and trust. In short, oxytocin is cats and hugs. Oxytocin levels rise with close contact with loved ones and/or animals. It is also associated with hugs and other pleasant touches. A large amount of oxytocin is released during sexual intercourse, and directly at the time of orgasm - both in men and women.

Oxytocin reduces stress and anxiety levels and induces a sense of calm. Oxytocin is associated with such manifestations of altruism as generosity and generosity. Oxytocin is a mother's love for a child, it is any manifestation of unconditional love.

Physical activity that increases oxytocin levels is a pleasant rhythmic movement. Unlike endorphins, oxytocin is released during exercise, not after. Oxytocin practices (for example, Yoga for women) do not cause a feeling of excitement and euphoria, but give a pleasant feeling of calmness, satisfaction and harmony.

In women, oxytocin is produced when we look at small children or breastfeed. If these options are not available to you in this moment, it is advisable to dilute your diet of physical activity with oxytocin practices.

In general, the choice physical activity which is right for you depends on many conditions and is very individual. To preserve women's health, it is desirable to reduce the level of endorphins in life, because there is enough stress in it without them. Choose pleasure without pain!

June 17-18 within the framework of the project, I will give a lecture and a yoga class “Harmony of Harmonics”.

"Harmony of Hormones" is a lecture and practice about why we are the way we are, how to stay healthy, live in harmony with ourselves and others, knowing about the characteristics of the female body. In the lesson, we will discuss the cyclical nature of the female nature, the effect of hormones on us depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle, and also find out why we need to adjust the practice of yoga according to each phase. After that, we will do a universal harmonizing practice that will return you to a filled, resourceful state.

Everyone knows that high spirits, a feeling of euphoria, uncontrollable laughter are a variety of complex processes that occur in the human body. Hormones of happiness accompany this phenomenon: endorphin, serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin.

But not always and everywhere these hormones visit a person. There are times when the opposite is true. Apathy, loneliness, oppression, depression, Bad mood, depression - the reasons can be different (from bad weather to a significant incident). Sometimes these conditions are associated with the presence of a serious illness.

Solving the problem is quite simple than it seems at first glance. There are many ways: proper nutrition (each hormone has its own), reviewing habits, physical activity. By doing at least one of them daily, it is highly likely that you will no longer have emotional problems.

Endorphins

The hormone of happiness is replenished in the body naturally, since it is produced in the brain. This reduces the appearance of stress and depression, as well as avoiding a depressed mood. The principle of action of endorphins is to eliminate the harbinger of pain. This contributes to more rapid calm, removal of irritability.

The previous hormone production factors have been studied in detail, and finally it became known about their features: it is worth adhering to proper nutrition, change some habits and devote more time to sports.

As for the consumption of healthy food, a special list of permitted foods has been formed. This group includes:

To cheer up is quite simple, the main thing is to resort to one of these methods. It is possible to combine 2 things at once: sports (endorphins + a healthy body), extreme sports (endorphins + favorite pastime).

Dopamine, or as it is also called, dopamine, is a special hormone that motivates a person to high goals and results, to satisfy desires and needs. Dopamine is produced in the brain, which causes a feeling of pleasure due to a task well done. It is an important link in the motivational and training systems.

The hormone of happiness directs a person to achieve the best result when performing any task. Inaction, lethargic attitude, laziness, lack of confidence in one's own strengths and capabilities - this is all a consequence of a dopamine deficiency. To get rid of such sensations, it is imperative to take accompanying measures. There are several ways to replenish the hormone: a special diet, encouragement for overtime work.

Diet therapy for dopamine deficiency involves taking healthy foods. It is them that a person should consume in greater quantities:

  • fish products, fruits (banana, avocado), dairy products (cottage cheese), nuts and pumpkin seeds. These foods have tyrosine (an amino acid), which is a kind of analogue of dopamine. Tyrosine also contain meat, butter. Their inclusion in the diet should be consulted with a nutritionist, since a large amount of fat may not be equally beneficial for all people.
  • vegetables (cucumber, pumpkin, carrots, beets, cabbage, tomatoes), greens, berries (strawberries), fruits (citrus fruits) are equally rich in antioxidants and vitamins of groups C and E. It is these elements that protect the brain center from otherworldly influences, and together to synthesize the production of dopamine.

Much depends on the mood of the person himself. So, you can make up for the lack of dopamine with physical activity: conquer a mountain, exceed yesterday's result (in running, swimming, pulling up). This indicates the importance of self-stimulation of the body's capabilities in order to reach new heights more easily.

In offices and small centers, productivity can also be easily increased. Enough to encourage good workers with bonuses, severance pay. This gesture motivates employees to achieve a better result.

Serotonin

Such a hormone of happiness allows you to fully experience your own superiority and significance. Serotonin deficiency is clearly visible visually, manifested by depressive states, addiction to alcohol and suicidal tendencies. There is an opinion that the formation of criminals is due precisely to the lack of serotonin in their body. The hormone is present in most antidepressants.

Many studies have been conducted, one of which determined the significance of serotonin for the human body. The fact is that self-confident and leading groups of people are more in need of a hormone than subordinates to this group. If you provide a separate existence from each other, then there will be a decrease in the level of serotonin.

Avoiding such situations is quite simple. The main thing is to follow some rules: eat right, sunbathe moderately in direct sunlight, take time to rest. More detailed description 3 rules:

  1. Consume only healthy foods: dairy (cheese, milk, cottage cheese), fruits (plums), vegetables (tomatoes), nuts, dark chocolate.
  2. Intense and natural tanning is much more effective than artificial tanning. AT summer period the skin is saturated with useful vitamins and microelements, and all thanks to ultraviolet radiation. These actions have a beneficial effect on mood, as the production of serotonin increases. But there is no need for excessive sunburn, so you can only harm your health. If it is not possible to travel to hot countries, then you can use another alternative. Sun rays come through the window - it is better to enjoy their influence.
  3. Daily relaxation and rest stimulates the production of serotonin. These moments can be accompanied by pleasant memories. So, recently committed deeds (of good intentions), a passage of good time, memorable events - all this testifies to the value and significance of life.

The hormone of happiness helps to improve mood, gaining one's own benefit and significance for others. Understanding the essence of life is easy with self-knowledge.

Oxytocin

It is responsible for trusting relationships between people, security and confidence, and eliminates uncertainty, fear. Oxytocin strengthens relationships. Thus, its influence can be clearly seen in a small child and mother, as well as in the period of intimacy between a man and a woman. The hormone is actively produced during love and passion.

Oxytocin strengthens marriage bonds, reducing family breakdown. This is a fact, since there have been more than one study confirming this. With a deficiency of oxytocin, men are increasingly attracted to free women, but a sufficient amount of it in another body, on the contrary, delays attraction to females. Therefore, we can safely say that oxytocin has a positive effect on relationships, instilling harmony, mutual understanding and trust in them.

Frequent hugs are also beneficial for both sexes: men and women. Every day you need to hug 8 times. If this value is slightly less, then you need to correct the situation. It is better to make up for the lack by replacing handshakes with hugs. This will only strengthen the relationship.

Oxytocin improves trusting relationships, causes generosity. These are positive traits. You can safely wish for something special in a person upon reaching high values hormone. So, this is well seen during sexual contact. After all, achieving orgasm stimulates the production of oxytocin. You can achieve a generous attitude in other ways: make a surprise / present the desired gift, provide a service, fulfill an order.

Hormones of joy and happiness- it is they who are those invisible thin threads that connect the human body with his soul, making us feel anxiety and sadness, excitement or euphoria. They are produced in the course of chemical processes that a person is quite able to start by eating certain foods. Let's name 5 hormones responsible for our mood and foods that enhance their production.

1. Dopamine - the hormone of anticipation of pleasure

17 years ago, a neuroscientist from Stanford University (USA) Brian Knutson proved that dopamine is responsible for anticipation of pleasure and not for his experience. Thanks to this hormone, a person can experience positive emotions already in the process of waiting for something pleasant, while thinking about achieving the most distant goals. This helps him overcome all the difficulties on the way to them. The closest relatives of man - monkeys - are not able to make plans for years to come. Spanish, Italian and American experts found out why. It turns out that in primates, a much smaller number of nerve cells produce dopamine.

The building material for the production of the hormone is the amino acid tyrosine. It is produced in small amounts by the body itself, but the bulk comes from food. Tyrosine is found in abundance in peanuts, pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds.

2. Serotonin - a hormone that helps to feel pleasure

Most of the hormone is produced by the cells of the intestinal mucosa - about 90% and only 5-10% - in the brain. Serotonin is called the hormone of happiness, but it has been proven that this substance in itself does not bring pleasure, but only helps to feel it involved in the regeneration of brain cells. Thanks to serotonin, a person is able to experience a long, quiet, calm joy, self-confidence, satisfaction. Hormone deficiency leads to the fact that brain cells stop, depression develops, emotional disorders, apathy and. In 2002, experts at the University of Birmingham found that serotonin inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Raw material for production hormone of joy and happiness is the essential amino acid tryptophan. The leaders in its content are Swiss cheese, Roquefort cheese, black caviar. A lot of amino acids are present in cheese, Parmesan and Cheddar cheeses, soy and sunflower seeds.

Dopamine and serotonin suppress each other's production.

3.Endorphin - the hormone of euphoria

Endorphin is natural pain reliever in the human body, produced by brain cells in response to pain and stress. The hormone is able to block the nerve endings responsible for pain. Athletes endorphin helps to withstand and not experience discomfort. The hormone causes a person state of bliss, euphoria. Endorphins are substances of a protein nature, and therefore, for their internal production, protein products. Sweets, especially chocolate and ice cream, also contribute to the production of beta-endorphins. showed that the synthesis of the euphoria hormone is enhanced when hot and spicy foods are taken, and therefore it is recommended to periodically include chili peppers and mustard in the diet. Of the medicinal plants, ginseng is a stimulant for the production of endorphins.

4. Oxytocin - the hormone of love and tenderness, affection and trust

Oxytocin rightly called the hormone of love, since the psycho-emotional state of a person and his sexual life fall under the sphere of its influence. Recent studies have proven that it has a powerful effect on gender relations, enhances orgasmic intensity and satisfaction from sexual intimacy. It also strengthens emotional bonds and is responsible for the mother's feeling of attachment to the child. Interestingly, under the influence of the hormone, a person begins to relate more reverently not to everyone, but only to the closest people, there is a desire to protect their own from strangers. Oxytocin promotes the release of endorphins. deficit love hormone can cause irritability, prolonged depression, aggression towards those who previously doted on. There are not so many products that promote the synthesis of oxytocin. These are dates, pomegranate juice, beets, corn and potato chips.

5. Testosterone - the hormone of rivalry and winners

The famous ancient Greek healer Hippocrates said: "We are what we eat." Today, the validity of these words can be explained from a scientific point of view: the foods that we eat largely determine the concentration in the blood hormones joy and happiness that affect our mood and behavior.
