In medicine, a condition characterized by frequent fatigue and pain in the legs, a feeling of weakness and discomfort in the limbs, is called “restless legs syndrome”. This problem periodically worries not only people engaged in hard physical labor, but also those who lead a sedentary lifestyle or perform sedentary work. When the legs get tired and sore as a result of significant exertion, this is understandable. However, the systematic manifestation of this symptom can provoke the development of serious diseases.

Constant fatigue and pain in the legs can be caused simply by wearing uncomfortable shoes or long physical activity, and may be the result of a malfunction in the circulatory system and the development of such venous diseases as chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, thrombophlebitis of veins (superficial and deep), embolism of the arteries of the lower extremities, nonspecific aortoarteritis, thrombosis.

The cause of pain in the legs may be the defeat of atherosclerosis of the arteries of the lower extremities. Chronic inflammation gradually leads to the fact that the lumen of the arteries narrows, and this significantly complicates the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues of the lower extremities, carried out through the blood.

According to statistics, restless leg syndrome occurs in about 75% of women and 25% of men, aged 35 years and older.

Fatigue in the legs can serve as a signal of a change in the walls of blood vessels and nerves, which is observed during diabetes, and also be one of the symptoms of Raynaud's disease. Sometimes fatigue develops quickly when the shape of the foot changes - flat feet.

First aid for tired legs

When your legs get tired, the first thing to do is to give them a little rest. To do this, you need to sit down or lie down for 30 minutes, while the limbs should be in a slightly elevated position: this contributes to a more intense outflow of lymph and blood.

A complex of measures, including exercises, massage and water procedures, helps to instantly relieve fatigue and tension in the legs, improve blood flow.

Exercise "Bicycle". Lying on your back, raise your legs up, arms outstretched to the sides. Let's start pedaling. We perform this simple exercise for 2-3 minutes, after which we proceed to the foot bath.

Contrast baths. We prepare two basins with hot water (about 40 degrees) and cool. We lower the legs alternately, first into one, then into the other basin. Keep your feet in the water for 10 seconds. We repeat the manipulations 20 times, we finish the procedure with cold water. We dry our feet with a towel, rubbing them well, and grease them with foot cream.

It is better to refrain from the procedure if there are problems with the kidneys.

Massage. Its implementation takes no more than 20 minutes. First, we apply a cream or massage oil on the feet, then we begin to massage them in a circular motion - from the heels towards the fingertips, and then back. Next, we rise higher and with our palms massage the area from the ankles to the knees. We finish the massage with flexion / extension of the toes.

With varicose veins, it is necessary to consult a doctor about the choice of massage.

Walking barefoot. Arriving home after work, do not rush to jump into your favorite slippers. Walk barefoot more often around the house, thus stimulating the nerve endings located on the feet. For home foot massage, an excellent solution would be to purchase a special foot massage mat or large pebbles (you can buy it at a pet store).

Sometimes, from severe fatigue, doctors prescribe the wearing of therapeutic compression stockings. Clothing is shown to people suffering from varicose veins, as it prevents the occurrence of edema. Doctors also prescribe the use of orthopedic pillows for the legs during a night's sleep.

  • atherosclerosis of the arteries;
  • endarteritis;
Varicose veins implies the expansion of the saphenous veins. At the beginning of the disease there is a feeling of fatigue and buzzing in the legs. After a while, convulsions appear, swollen veins begin to bulge. The development of varicose veins can take years. And during this period, the patient will not have much discomfort. However, the disease must be fought through the therapy prescribed by the doctor.
Arteriosclerosis- this is when cholesterol plaques form on the walls of the arteries. Pathology is accompanied by a feeling of coldness in the feet, regardless of the weather, and pain in the calves.

Endarteritis is an inflammatory process in the arterial vessels with subsequent damage to the legs. In the process of movement, lameness is observed due to pain in the legs, it increases significantly. In addition, the pathology is accompanied by coldness of the feet and frequent convulsions.

Thrombophlebitis determined by the pathology of the veins, which has an inflammatory character. Stagnation of venous blood is inevitable, the formation of blood clots is inevitable. The course of the disease is accompanied by pulsation in the legs, subcutaneous burning and swelling. A lethal outcome is possible when a blood clot is torn off.

Causes of leg fatigue associated with disorders in the body

Tonics for veins (venotonics), in addition to improving venous tone, contribute to the normalization of tissue microcirculation and. The work of blood vessels improves due to the restoration of the activity of venous valves and thrombosis is minimized.

Creams with an extract of a medicinal leech (a number of biological components to stabilize the work of capillaries) have a beneficial effect in venous pathologies. Thanks to this extract, the outflow and inflow of blood and lymph are improved, as a result of which edema disappears, the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the site of inflammation improves.

The problem of smoking is still considered one of the most acute - every year thousands of people die from it. The fight against nicotine addiction is considered a difficult, lengthy undertaking, since there are no universal ways for everyone.

Instruction

You need to quit smoking immediately, and not gradually, reducing the amount smoked per day. Even one a day will satisfy the body's need for nicotine, so this method cannot be called getting rid of. Accordingly, sooner or later a person who decides to quit smoking by reducing the number of cigarettes smoked will return to his usual dosage. The same applies to switching to the so-called "light" ones - you will simply smoke more of them than regular ones.

Take special drugs to facilitate smoking cessation - you can get them at the pharmacy (Tabex, for example). They do not contain nicotine and cause the smoker to be disgusted with him for a while. During this period, a person can realize and firmly form his desire to get rid of addiction, as well as assess his strength in the process of quitting smoking.

Use psychological techniques to get rid of nicotine addiction. As a rule, people with developed willpower cope with this problem easily - they just smoke and do not return to this habit, realizing its harm and absolute uselessness for themselves. A competent psychologist or hard work on oneself with the definition of priorities and goals in life will help to cope with addiction.

Be prepared for the fact that you will constantly want to smoke. But the desire will gradually weaken, and after 3-6 months you will be able to safely visit public places where there are a lot of smokers, meet in the same company with friends who smoke, etc.

At the time of quitting smoking, pay more attention to sports - exercise intensively, swim, visit a sauna or bath. In addition to psychological cleansing, it is necessary to help the body get rid of traces of nicotine - drink more, take vitamins, eat well and sleep a lot.

The causes and treatment of fatigue in the legs are inextricably linked, that is, only by finding out the etiology of this phenomenon, the specialist will be able to correctly prescribe therapy. If leg fatigue occurs frequently, this can be an alarming signal: an arterial or venous disease may begin.

Why do legs get tired if a person sits all day? The answer is simple - lymph flow becomes worse, venous blood stagnates, a feeling of heaviness and pain arises in the limbs. Sometimes fatigue sets in for no apparent reason. This may indicate pathology in the vessels. When wearing uncomfortable shoes, leg fatigue can also occur. If the shoes are narrow, then they can provoke a violation of blood flow, which leads to rapid fatigue of the limbs. These symptoms should not be ignored, as they can signal serious problems.

If a person is concerned about constant fatigue in the legs, then the causes of this condition can be both easily eliminated (for example, uncomfortable shoes) and requiring serious treatment. The etiology of the phenomenon can lie in circulatory failure, varicose veins, thrombophlebitis, venous insufficiency, thrombosis, aortoarteritis, arterial embolism.

According to statistics, women are more likely to suffer from such unpleasant sensations than men. Usually this is faced by people who have stepped over the 35-year milestone. So, the most common pathologies:

  1. Pain and fatigue can be a symptom of atherosclerosis of the lower extremities. In the presence of chronic inflammation, the arterial lumens narrow, respectively, the tissues of the lower extremities are less supplied with oxygen.
  2. If there are changes in the walls of blood vessels and nerves, the legs also get tired quickly. This happens with diabetes or with Raynaud's disease.
  3. Flat feet can also lead to restless legs syndrome.
  4. Varicose veins are the main cause of heaviness in the limbs. It is a disease of 80% of the world's people. At the beginning of the disease, the legs seem to “buzz”, then convulsions may appear, and as a result, the vessels swell and protrude. The disease does not occur suddenly, it is a long process, sometimes dragging on for decades. But no matter how long it lasts, the problem will not be solved by itself. As soon as the first symptoms appear, you need to go to the doctor and take action.
  5. Thrombophlebitis is another common cause. This pathology of the vessels, in which, due to the inflammatory process, a blood clot forms in the wall of the vein - a thrombus, which partially or completely closes its lumen. The danger of the disease is that sooner or later it can come off and be transferred by blood flow to any other organ. In addition to fatigue of the legs, the disease manifests itself as a sharp pain in the calves, when squeezing the muscles with the hands, discomfort is also felt, the limb may turn red, swelling appears, not only on the legs, but also under the eyes. The temperature may rise. If you feel the veins, then the thrombosed vessel will feel hard and swollen to the touch.
  6. Endarteritis is an inflammation of the vessels of the lower extremities. It is impossible to confuse this disease with any other. In addition to pain and a constant feeling of tired legs, there is a slight lameness when walking. The patient's feet are always icy, often there is numbness of the limb, convulsions. With the progression of the disease, trophic ulcers can occur, and if deep vessels are involved in the process, then gangrene can develop.

What can be done?

Depending on the reasons, you can do the following:

  1. If tired legs are a sign of a pathology or disease, then you need to visit a doctor and treat the disease itself, and not its symptom.
  2. If the cause of fatigue is uncomfortable, narrow or high-heeled shoes, then it is advisable to refuse it or at least wear it only when necessary.
  3. If fatigue occurs due to a long walk, or, conversely, due to prolonged immobility of the legs, then you can use the advice of traditional medicine.

The water should not be too hot, it is best if it is around 37ºС. The duration of the procedure is 10-20 minutes. The following can be used as medicinal decoctions:

  1. Horsetail, wormwood, succession or St. John's wort. Can be done individually or all at once. It is good to add a couple of tablespoons of sea salt to the broth.
  2. Linden blossom and chamomile, add a spoonful of honey.
  3. Nettle and mint.
  4. Rowan, calendula and wormwood.
  5. Peel of citrus.

Essential oils show good results. When using these substances, the motto "more is better" cannot be used. Essential oils can be added no more than 2-3 drops, it is advisable to drip them into decoctions or saline solutions. Pregnant women should not take baths with such compounds. So here are a couple of recipes:

  1. Put ice cubes in water, 1 tbsp. l. milk, 3 drops of lemon juice and 2 drops of mint oil.
  2. Pour 3 tbsp into warm water. l. sea salt and 3 drops of lavender oil. The same bath can be done with cypress, fir, lemon or juniper oil.

Heaviness and aches will help to remove the cabbage leaf. It must be rolled out with a rolling pin or mashed until juice appears. Attach to the legs and not tightly bandage for half an hour.

Heaviness and pain quickly eliminates alcohol. It is necessary to vigorously rub the feet with the substance for 20 seconds, and then place the legs on the roller and lie down for about 15 minutes.

Performing a massage

Massage very well relieves tired legs, which arose from a long walk or wearing uncomfortable shoes. Lie on your stomach, bend your knees and alternately hit your buttocks with your heels. If this does not work out right away, then the thigh muscles have hardened, so you just need to do this exercise every day. Over time, the fabric will gain elasticity.

Very good for fatigue and pain in the legs, massage of the Sezan point helps. It is located exactly in the center of the calf muscle. Try to massage this tired area for a minute, and immediately there will be lightness in the legs.

There is also a point in the middle of the foot, which is useful to treat after a long walk, especially if a woman spent the whole day in heels. This point is called Kiketsu. Actively press it or stand on a nut to massage this area more effectively.

You can massage the entire foot on your own. This is especially useful and pleasant after a foot bath. Steamed limbs should be lubricated with cream or oil and massage the foot from heels to toes and back in circular motions. You need to spend at least 10 minutes on each leg. Then rise higher and work out with your palms the area from the ankles to the knees.

Move your toes, bend and unbend them. Then get up on your feet and rise up on your toes several times, each time trying to rise higher and higher. Before starting any massage of the extremities, one should consult a doctor, especially for persons who have varicose veins or thrombophlebitis.

Standing not only accelerates fatigue, but also increases the risk of various foot problems due to constant stress on bones, joints, tendons, muscles and ligaments. Often, when a person spends a lot of time on his feet, his blood supply to the lower extremities worsens, which leads to pain. Also, with prolonged standing on your feet, blood may accumulate in the feet or around the ankles. Flat feet, plantar fasciitis, bursitis, calluses, swelling, varicose veins, and venous insufficiency are all associated with large quantity time spent on your feet. You should be aware that there are many ways to reduce or avoid the risk of foot problems if you have a standing job.

Steps

Increase the number of sitting breaks

Sit down more often while you work. The world today is dominated sedentary work, but still there are such professions in which you have to stand a lot - a bank clerk, a cashier, a factory worker, a hairdresser, as well as employees in retail and construction. Even people in these specialties have moments in the middle of the day when they can sit down and relax without reducing their work efficiency, so do not miss such opportunities and do not forget to warn your boss. For example, it may be perfectly acceptable to sit while talking on the phone or doing paperwork, especially when there are no visitors.

    • Older people are more prone to leg fatigue and disease due to standing work, as tissues (ligaments, tendons, cartilage, muscle sheaths) lose their elasticity and ability to absorb shock.
  1. Have a seat at lunch time. When it's time for dinner, don't forget to sit in a chair and rest your legs while you replenish your energy and fluid stores. You may not have much time, but use every opportunity to reduce the load on your legs. If your office doesn't have enough chairs or doesn't have a dining area, you can bring your own folding chair or find another room where you can sit down for lunch.

    • Eateries in shopping malls, outdoor tables, drinking fountains, or even a clean lawn under a tree is great for relaxing and enjoying your lunch.
  2. Take a seat during breaks. Take all your legal breaks and try to take them in a seated position, preferably with your legs up to improve blood circulation. You can also take off your shoes during rest so that your feet can cool down and “breathe”.

Stand on different types of surfaces

    1. Stay in different places. Many years ago, almost all workplaces had a wooden floor, which had a softening effect, despite the apparent rigidity. AT modern world buildings have concrete, ceramic or marble floors that have no cushioning, shock absorbing or insulating properties at all. Therefore, it is recommended to spend more time on your feet in areas with wood floors. If this is not possible, then simply change your location as a warm-up exercise to improve blood circulation and reduce muscle tension.

      • Concrete and tile floors quickly cool down and chill your feet, impairing blood circulation, so it's best to stand in warm, draft-free areas.
      • When working outdoors, it's best to stand on the grass while you're minding your own business or waiting for your next task.
    2. Stand on an anti-fatigue pad. Anti-fatigue pads are designed to reduce pressure on the feet, providing a cushioned surface for extended standing. These pads are usually made from dense rubber, but are also made from foam, leather, vinyl, and even wood. In most cases, your employer will respond to a request for these pads because they have been proven to reduce foot soreness.

      • Thick anti-fatigue pads are a minor hazard in the workplace - you can trip over them, so always keep an eye on your pad and warn employees about it.
    3. Stand on carpet. Look around you for a carpet to stand on while you work. Carpet (even inexpensive and thin) has a much greater cushioning capacity than concrete and will become a reliable ally of your feet while you work. If there are no carpets nearby, then ask permission to bring a small rug from home.

      • Carpet shops can provide you with samples of sufficient size free of charge.
      • Make sure that the underside of the carpet does not slip on the floor, otherwise you may slip and fall.

    Wear suitable shoes and socks

    1. Choose the right size shoes. A significant number of people wear shoes that are not their size. There are several reasons: the legs may continue to grow, the shoes may be bought on sale or donated. In any case, work shoes should always fit well with socks on. If you have no choice but to wear shoes that are the wrong size, then it is better to take one that is larger, as smaller shoes can cause blisters and cramps.

Don't wear high heels. Women are often forced or asked to wear high heels, but heels above 2 inches tend to tilt the body forward, causing balance problems and sagging backs. All this leads to increased stress on the legs, tendonitis, tension in the calf muscles, pain in the knee joints and concavity of the back, as well as unsteadiness when walking.

      • Flat shoes are also not the best option, as they put excessive pressure on the heels, so it is best to choose shoes with a heel of up to 1.5 cm.
      • Sneakers and casual shoes with a wide toe are a great choice for someone with a standing job.
    2. Don't wear tight shoes. Shoes with high heels often taper towards the toe, resulting in unnatural clenching of the toes, increasing the risk of bumps and unsightly growths. Cowboy boots and some open-toe sandals also have pointed toes, which is especially harmful when standing. It's best to choose shoes with a snug heel fit and plenty of room for squeezing your toes, as well as good internal support to prevent overpronation.

Wear compression stockings. Compression stockings provide support to the muscles and blood vessels of the lower leg, reducing swelling and inflammation, and improving circulation. They can be bought on the Internet, orthopedic salon and some pharmacies. You can also wear supportive tights or soft socks.

    Relief Therapy

    1. Do foot baths. Warming your feet in a warm Epsom salt bath significantly reduces pain and swelling. The magnesium in the salt helps to relax the muscles. If you suffer from inflammation and swelling of the legs, then alternate a warm salt bath with an ice bath until you feel numbness in your legs (about 15 minutes).

      • Always dry your feet after such procedures, otherwise you can slip and fall.
      • Epsom salt baths are also helpful for relieving restless leg syndrome at night, which has a negative effect on sleep cycles.
    2. Get a foot massage. Foot and calf massages can be done by a massage therapist or a close friend. It will reduce muscle tension and improve blood flow. Massage the legs from the toes to the lower leg so that the venous blood returns to the heart. You can use a wooden roller under your feet to warm up your legs on your own. You can also apply peppermint lotion to your feet to tingle and relax your feet. After the massage, it is useful to do some stretching exercises for the feet and lower legs.

      • For a calf stretch, lean against a wall with one knee bent and the other leg straight behind you with your feet on the floor - stay in this position for 30 seconds and repeat several times.
      • To stretch your feet, wrap a towel around your toe and try to stretch your leg - stay in this position for 30 seconds and repeat several times.
    3. Wear orthopedic insoles. Orthopedic insoles for shoes are designed to act as an arch support, shock absorber and improve the biomechanics of the feet, which helps to reduce stress on the feet, legs and back, and also reduces the risk of various diseases. Orthotic insoles are especially effective in relieving and preventing plantar fasciitis, an extremely painful foot condition, and flat feet. These custom-made insoles can be very expensive, but mass-produced insoles can also be used.

      • According to statistics, every year in the United States alone, about two million people suffer from plantar fasciitis.
      • For orthopedic insoles, you will need to buy shoes slightly larger than your usual size.
